Mr Alex Day is a Consultant Ophthalmic surgeon at the London Vision Clinic and as a locum Consultant cataract surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital. Alex specialises in refractive laser eye surgery (LASIK, SMILE (keyhole LASIK), LASEK and PRK) and also both phacoemulsification and laser assisted cataract surgery. He has performed over 2000 surgeries. Mr Alex Day is caring and passionate about his surgery and work, and is highly driven to achieve the best possible visual outcomes.
Alex’s interest in Ophthalmology started as a medical student when he performed his first eye surgery under supervision. He qualified as a doctor from St George’s Hospital Medical School, London with a double Distinction and 1st Class BSc (Hons). His Ophthalmology training was initially on the south London rotation before moving to Moorfields Eye Hospital in 2007 where he underwent 10 years of additional training. During his Higher Surgical Training at Moorfields Alex worked as a Specialist Registrar whilst completing his PhD at University College London, and later became an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer; and Fellow. Alex undertook fellowship subspecialist training in Cataract, Glaucoma and Corneal transplant surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital. Alex also worked as a part time refractive surgery fellow to Mr Julian Stevens from 2007 to 2015.
Mr Alex Day is on the UK General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register, became a Member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (MRCOphth) in 2007 and later a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth) in 2013. He also holds the Royal College of Ophthalmologists DRCOphth, Royal College of Ophthalmologists Certificate in Laser and Refractive Surgery (CertLRS) and the Ulster University Postgraduate Diploma in Cataract and Refractive Surgery (PGDip CRS, Distinction).
Mr Alex Day is recognised as a Consultant by many private health insurers. Recognition means the insurer will allow its members to access the services provided by Mr Alex Day. However it does not guarantee that Mr Day's fees will be fully reimbursed and you will still be responsible for any shortfall. Please be advised that private health insurers do not cover laser refractive surgery or refractive lens surgery. If you have private health insurance, you should check with your insurer the terms of your policy, and in particular you should check the level and type of outpatient cover you have.
A leader in the field
Mr Alex Day is internationally recognised for his research in cataract and refractive surgery. Alex was ranked no.2 globally by The Ophthalmologist as a Rising Star in 2017. He has published over 50 papers in peer reviewed medical journals. He was responsible for the concept and formation of the group behind the Femto assisted Cataract Trial (FACT). This is a £1.5 million NIHR funded multicentre randomised controlled trial of femtosecond laser assisted vs manual phacoemulsification cataract surgery. He was the lead author on the previous Royal College of Ophthalmologists National Ophthalmology Database publications on cataract surgery outcomes that provide national benchmarking standards for visual outcomes and complication rates.
Alex is a member of many professional organisations including the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ESCRS), The British Society for Refractive Surgery (BSRS) and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS). He is also a Liveryman of The Worshipful Company of Skinners’ and also The Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers.
Alex had his own LASIK performed by Professor Dan Reinstein at the London Vision Clinic in April 2018, and has eyesight 3 lines better than 20/20 (20/10) with N4 near vision each eye.
Some highlights include running the London Marathon and rowing at Molesey boat club. In his spare time Alex enjoys running, swimming, skiing and reading. He is also a competent offshore powerboat driver and holds RYA and international certification. Alex lives in central London.
